We are committed to providing financial and technical resources needed to make our communities more self-sustaining, energy efficient and durable as well as to limit negative impacts they would have on health or ecology. Great Lakes Capital Fund provides advice for high-performance construction, community planning, and review of construction specifications and design.

Sustainable Communities also provide resources to help community developers "Do no harm". These specific approaches are being taken:

  1. Sustainable Community Guidance. Ed Bobinchak, Vice President Sustainable Communities is certified as a LEED Accredited Professional. He is working with all GLCF staff to ensure that they have access to “green” professionals and can provide advice and assistance to promote sustainable development.
  2. Sustainable Consulting Contracts. Great Lakes Capital Fund is part of the Enterprise Green Communities technical assistance directory and works with state housing authorities to provide workshops and trainings around “green” development.
  3. Sustainable Lending. Great Lakes Capital Fund is providing resources for energy efficiency and to leverage additional upgrade in buildings or the purchase of renewable energy technologies.
  4. Sustainable Investing. Private Equity Capital for sustainable development is one criterion for the GLCF Triple Bottom Line Fund. Other investments will be leveraged through CDFI funding and the New Markets Tax Credit programs. Equity investments in renewable energy through wind, solar, and bio-mass conversion are also being planned.
